Here in Brazil there are quite a lot of companies that makes money selling free software, All public schools in brazil uses KDE and KDE Edu software, but nothing was donated back to the project. This is not illegal, I know that, but it looks immoral.

2 – That Free Software Projects stops fighting each other, and help each other instead.

Just like KDE and Gnome had a past of fighting and a few scratches are still made, they are making things better by creating and using standard, not perfect yet, but they are trying.

3 – That no free software project be created with the intuit of killing another free software, help the first instead.

4 – That Students around the world be more focused and willing to help free projects as interns.

5 – That Algorithm and OO teachers stops using Java for everything and saying that java is good because you ‘code once, run everywhere’, and please, stop teaching UI programming with Swing…

No último dia 14 de Outubro o KDE completou 15 anos de muito trabalho, inovação e diversão é claro ! O KDE Brasil aproveitou a 8a. Edição da Conferência Latino-Americana de Software Livre (Latinoware 2011) para realizar uma grande festa ! Este ano, mais do que nunca, tivemos um stand super bacana: banner dos 15 anos do KDE, TV para demonstrar as feature mais legais do KDE e passar vídeos bacanas, diversos “apetrechos” do KDE: camisas, pins, adesivos, cartões postais, etc. O IV Fórum KDE Brasil – Edição Latino-Americana trouxe para o Latinoware uma série de palestras e mini-cursos sobre as tecnologias Qt e KDE.

Na quarta-feira, dia 19, tivemos o mini-curso “Desenvolvendo Aplicações Mobile com Qt 4.8″, ministrado por Sandro Andrade e Luis Paulo Torres. No mini-curso foram apresentados os principais recursos do Qt Mobility 1.2 que promovem o desenvolvimento cross-platform de aplicações para o Symbian, Maemo, Meego e também Android e iOS. Laboratórios práticos de acesso aos diversos sensores (acelerômetro, orientação, etc), dados de contatos e integração com GPS foram realizados. A participação do público foi excelente: 20 participantes (sala lotada) e mais alguns de pé.

O Latinoware 2011 trouxe uma interessante tecnologia (E-Take) para o favorecimento da redução do consumo de papel no evento. Cada participante recebeu, no momento do credenciamento, um pequeno dispositivo utilizado para solicitar material em meio digital previamente disponibilizado pelos stands. O participante aproximava o dispositivo de um receptor presente em cada stand e automaticamente o material era enviado para o seu e-mail.

Na sexta-feira, dia 21, ocorreu o Forum KDE propriamente dito com a palestra de abertura “15 anos de KDE: o que construimos ? para onde iremos ?”, apresentada por Aracele Torres. Na apresentação, revisitamos toda a trajetória do KDE ao longo deste período, destacando as grandes conquistas e os projetos mais desafiadores.

Logo em seguida a palestra “KDE Frameworks 5: o que você ganha com isso ?” ministrada por Sandro Andrade, apresentou as facilidades atualmente disponibilizadas pelo KDE Platform 4 e as modificações previstas na próxima liberação major das tecnologias KDE. APIs para multimídia (via Phonon), I/O síncrono e assíncrono, local ou remoto (KIO), controle de GUIs via XML (KXMLGUI), obtenção e upload de artefatos na web (Get Hot New Stuff), utilização de plugins e KParts foram demonstrados através de códigos exemplo. Aspectos sobre modularização e definição explícitas de dependências na futura versão da plataforma (KDE Frameworks 5) foram também ilustrados. Uma das metas é favorecer ainda mais a execução de aplicações KDE no mais amplo espectro de dispositivos.

Dando continuidade ao IV Fórum KDE Brasil nosso amigo Juan Muguerza, do KDE Argentina, apresentou a palestra “Owncloud: cria a sua própria nuve com KDE”, onde a soluções opensource completa do KDE para computação na nuvem foi apresentada e discutida.

Encerrando nossa participação no VIII Latinoware, a palestra “Plasma Active: o KDE chega ao seu tablet” ministrada por Sandro Andrade apresentou a recém-lançada versão do workspace Plasma totalmente dedicado aos tablets e outros dispositivos móveis. As principais facilidades para criação de activities e ligação de URLs e aplicações às activities presentes foram demonstradas. Versões mobile das aplicações KDE Kontact e Calligra trazem uma maior facilidade de utilização nos tablets e ratificam o Plasma como tecnologia bastante promissora e certamente presente em uma ampla faixa de dispositivos em um futuro próximo.

Estamos felizes em anunciar que o Qt Project foi oficialmente lançado. A partir de hoje, o desenvolvimento do Qt será governado como um projeto verdadeiramente open source.

A partir de hoje está disponível o qt-project.org – um site que centralizará todas as informações sobre o desenvolvimento do Qt, fornecendo a mesma infra-estrutura e processos para qualquer um que queira contribuir com o Qt.

Qualquer pessoa pode ser um colaborador, e até mesmo um Mantenedor se mostrar mérito para isso.

It’s been a while since my last post. Just finishing some boring academic duties, I hope to be returning soon to KDE hacking again. In the meanwhile, we managed to prepare some cool stuff for KDE participation at Latinoware 2011 (Latin-American Conference on Free Software). KDE have been attending Latinoware in a more structured way since 2008. It’s the second biggest conference on Free Software in Brazil (roughly 4000 participants) and we are usually granted with enough room for talks and a cool roomy area for KDE booth arrangements.

This year we were close to my dreams’ KDE booth . A nice KDE banner + amazing KDE 15 years t-shirts + a lot of KDE swags + big TV set to show off great KDE videos.

Latinoware 2011 has deployed an interesting technology to spread out promotional material from all booths whilst yet reducing paper consumption during the meeting. All attenders received a small device configured with their personal email addresses which could then be used to request information by putting it closer to sensors installed at booths. The desired promo stuff are then sent to the participant’s email (we were previously asked to provide all digitized material to Latinoware organizing staff).

As usual, a Call for Presentations was issued at KDE Latin-America mailing list asking for talks and short-courses proposals from KDE communities in Argentina, Chile, Peru, and others. This year, we have Juan Muguerza from KDE Argentina presenting a talk about OwnCloud. As for the KDE program at Latinoware 2011 we had yesterday a short-course about “Developing Mobile Applications with Qt” which grabbed roughly 25 participants willing to deploy Qt applications in their beloved devices. Filipe Saraiva presented a talk about KDE-Edu and tomorrow we are going to have talks about KDE 15 years, KDE Frameworks, OwnCloud and Plasma Active.

Com as Activities, você pode reunir todos os documentos, pessoas, sites web, conteúdo multimídia e widgets, relacionados a um tópico, em um único lugar, construíndo visões personalizadas e interativas da sua vida. Com o Plasma Active as possibilidades são ilimitadas. Você pode adicionar quantos elementos você quiser a uma Activity, com o auxílio da sua funcionalidade de scroll ilimitado. Você pode criar quantas Activities quiser e alternar entre elas via touch-screen, utilizando o Activity Switcher.

Adicione conteúdo a sua Activity

Você escolhe o objetivo de uma Activity: planejar suas férias, trabalhar em um projeto da escola ou do trabalho, organizar as fotos da festa bacana do fim de semana, manter informações sobre suas redes sociais ou organizar seus sites preferidos de notícias. Crie uma Activity, informe o seu nome e seu papel de parede e comece a adicionar seus apetrechos ou diretamente através do botão “Adicionar” ou usando a interface Share Like Connect.

Compartilhando uma foto através do Share Like Connect

Share Like Connect é um grupo de três pequenos ícones sempre disponíveis no painel superior. Eles permitem que você rapidamente conecte o que você está fazendo a qualquer Activity – sites web ou imagens sendo visualizados, documentos, etc. Use o Share Like Connect para registrar seus bookmarks. Envie facilmente o que você está visualizando, por e-mail, para pessoas da sua lista de contatos.

Complementando as Activities, o Plasma Active disponibiliza um lançador rápido e eficiente de aplicações e inclui, por padrão, uma variedade de aplicativos para você usar e se divertir. Basta puxar o painel superior para baixo para tornar a área de seleção de aplicações visível. A seleção de aplicações apresenta as aplicações atualmente em execução, de modo que você pode facilmente alternar ou fechar os aplicativos. Puxando a seleção de aplicações um pouco mais para baixo faz com que o lançador de aplicações fique visível. Ele apresenta uma lista de ícones similar às outras interfaces para tablets e smartphones. A barra de busca integrada permite que você facilmente busque por aplicações instaladas no sistema.

O Peek and Launch permite que você alterne entre aplicações em execução e inicie outras

Quando uma aplicação é iniciada ela automaticamente se conecta à Activity atual. Aplicações relacionadas são mantidas em grupo e fora da sua visão quando você alterna para uma Activity diferente. O Plasma Active traz produtividade imediata para você. Várias aplicações estão por padrão incluidas – navegador web, visualizador de imagens, player de áudio e vídeo (Bangarang Active), visualizador de documentos com funcionalidades simples de edição (Calligra Active [beta]), total controle de e-mail e calendários (Kontact Touch) e diversos jogos divertidos. Estas aplicações são totalmente otimizadas para a interface touch screen. Centenas de outras aplicações estão gratuitamente disponíveis através dos repositórios on-line, embora a maioria delas não estejam ainda otimizadas para touch-screen.

Plasma Active é projetado e construído de forma aberta e é lançado sob a forma de software gratuito e de código aberto. Por trás das idéias do Plasma Active está uma comunidade vibrante de participantes e empresas trabalhando em conjunto por um único ideal: a criação de aplicações incríveis para os dispositivos atuais. Não há lock-ins proprietários ou segredos na frente dos esforços de projeto e desenvolvimento, somente uma fantástica experiência de usuário que você pode usar, se divertir e participar.

Como Obter o Plasma Active One

Imagens nas versões instalável e live estão disponíveis para download. Instruções detalhadas de instalação podem ser obtidas na página Instalação do Plasma Active. Tipicamente a instalação consiste simplesmente na inserção de um pendrive USB bootável no tablet, uma reinicialização e seguir as instruções na tela.

É também possível rodar o Plasma Active em uma máquina virtual para propósitos de teste e avaliação. Para maiores informações, bem como os problemas dessa abordagem, por favor refira-se à página Plasma Active em máquinas virtuais. Recomendamos fortemente, entretanto, a execução do Plasma Active em um tablet para melhor experiência.

O Futuro do Plasma Active

O Plasma Active One é mais um passo da longa jornada que a equipe KDE Plasma criou desde o início do projeto em 2007, originalmente para criação de um novo shell desktop. E não chegamos no fim desta caminhada. O Plasma Active Two será lançado em meados de Dezembro de 2011 com o Plasma Active Three programado para ser lançado no terceiro trimestre de 2012.

O Plasma Active Two terá suporte a recomendações automatizadas a Activities, permitindo que o Plasma Active ajude você a coletar e adicionar informações e documentos relevantes às suas Activities. Teremos também a visualização, filtragem e ordenação melhorados de todos os tipos de mídias e informações acessíveis no Plasma Active. Outras funcionalidades serão também desenvolvidas para o Share Like Connect baseado em plugins. Esta versão irá também conter melhorias relacionadas a estabilidade e desempenho, bem como correção de bugs.

O Plasma Active Three será outro lançamento importante onde focaremos nos desafios de segurança de dispositivos, de modo a manter os seus dados seguros e sob controle. Na versão três, começaremos a implementação de forms factors adicionais, para suportar settop boxes e handhelds. O Plasma é construído com a filosofia de “interfaces altamente modularizadas, re-utilizáveis e re-integráveis”. Isto nos permite mover rapidamente de um tipo de dispositivo para outro, mantendo sempre uma ótima experiência de usuário. Pretendemos explorar ao máximo esta flexibilidade nas futuras versões.

Em ciclos de desenvolvimento futuros, um maior número de aplicativos Active e widgets estarão disponíveis. Desenvolvedores de aplicações já existentes estão convidados a se juntarem a nós na “ativação” de suas aplicações para suportar touch-screen e outros form factors. As melhores e mais úteis aplicações serão lançadas nas próximas versões do Plasma Active. Um sistema fácil para download de outras aplicações estará também disponível.

Planejamos também incluir o ARM como arquitetura oficialmente suportada, em adição às plataformas Intel já contempladas. Este esforço está sendo executado em conjunto com as tarefas de redução do footprint do sistema operacional necessário para rodar o Plasma Active. Adicionalmente, estamos no processo de desenvolvimento de uma especificação clara e bem documentada sobre os requisitos subjacentes de sistema operacional necessários para uma boa execução do Plasma Active.

Plasma Active é um projeto aberto: todo o projeto, planejamento e desenvolvimento é feito em um ambiente de trabalho baseado em consenso. Compatibilidade de Hardware

As imagens do Plasma Active One foram testadas e são suportadas nos dispositivos WeTab, ViewSonic ViewPad, ExoPC e Lenovo Ideapad. Mais informações sobre compatibilidade de dispositivos podem ser encontradas aqui. O Plasma Active deve funcionar bem em outros dispositivos baseados em Intel. O suporte a dispositivos ARM está ainda em desenvolvimento. Entretanto, o Plasma Active foi instalado e executado com sucesso no Nokia N900 e outros dispositivos ARM.

Compatibilidade de Software

Praticamente qualquer software disponível para a plataforma Linux pode ser executado no Plasma Active. Recomendamos aplicações baseadas no Qt e no KDE visto que elas apresentam uma melhor integração com o Plasma Active One, o qual é também baseado no KDE Platform 4.7 e Qt 4.7. Outras aplicações, entretanto, executam e funcionam da mesma forma que funcionariam em qualquer outro sistema baseado no Linux. Isso inclui aplicações em linha de comando, acessíveis através do terminal com suporte a touch já presente no Plasma Active.

O Plasma Active é compatível com os workspaces do Plasma Desktop e Plasma Netbook. São todos baseados no mesmo framework, compartilhando mais de 95% do código-fonte. Esta é uma abordagem radicalmente diferente para similaridade de interfaces entre dispositivos. A maioria dos outros produtos para tablets ou são isolados (compartilhando pouco ou nada com outras interfaces de usuário) ou tentam utilizar interfaces desktop em displays pequenos. As interfaces baseadas no Plasma, entretanto, são criadas para tipos específicos de dispositivos mantendo ainda a grande maioria do código-fonte e esforços de engenharia. Consequentemente, widgets e aplicações escritas para o Plasma Desktop ou Netbook podem ser executadas normalmente em dispositivos com o Plasma Active.

Humboldt University

Yeah, I know it’s a bit too early for this, but from this year’s experience at the Berlin Desktop Summit, I’m not going to miss the next Akademy.

So, I’m finally back home after the Desktop Summit! It was the first time I met most of the KDE devs and even had the opportunity to help a bit in the organisation of such a wonderful conference.

The location chosen was really nice: Berlin is a beautiful city, German people is very receptive (and helpful!) to foreigners, its transport system is a dream (specially if you compare to what we have here in Brasil, unfortunately), and one can easily get all kinds of food. Everything without knowing a single word in German!

The Humboldt University provided us with a good Internet connection and big rooms for the talks and for the hacking sessions and is located in the hearth of Berlin, with lots of historical buildings, pubs and restaurants nearby, making our stay in Berlin a pleasure. The conference featured a lot of high quality talks and, together with the workshops, BoF’s and experience exchange, gave everyone a nice overview of the projects we usually don’t know much (both in KDE and Gnome).

Another good thing is that we had quite a lot of Brazilians attending the conference this year, so it looks like our local community is growing up \o/. Keep up, guys!

That was my first participation on a Desktop Summit/Akademy, but I’ll attend the next year’s Akademy for sure. It was a very valuable experience and interacting with/knowing the KDE people is really motivating. See you on Akademy 12!

Não teve nada do congresso ainda, afinal todos acabaram de chegar. Amanhã começa de verdade.

I Came to Rio de Janeiro 3 weeks ago, because Petrobras got in contact with Lamarque about a Qt course in here in Rio, since Lamarque was busy at the time, he delegated the course to me. The flight was confortable, just one hour flying from são paulo, but then things started to get messy. somebody stole my backpack in the airplane cabin, I talked with the cabin crew about it and they allowed everybody to leave, and WTF, my backpack with my laptop and everything inside. the flight arrived at 10pm, and I got out of the airport at 1am, sleeping in a overpriced – hotel near by. In the morning I had to give my first lesson but my Material was on the backpack. What to do? Well, luckly I know C++ well enougth to talk without an paper-reminder of what I need to say.

So I came to CENPES, the Centro de Pesquisas da Petrobrás in Ilha do Fundão, the artificial island where the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro main campus is located. The island was actually three islands that were joined together to build the campus, and has 5.238.337,82m² of total area. this is bigger than some countries.

Petrobras is the main Oil Company in brazil, and one of it’s primary research facilities is located in that island, and it was where I went to give a class. I was terrified, I’v never entered in a company so big before and I wanted everything to be perfect, but perfection to perfection, I nearly broke my feet one week before the classes started. take that for perfection. first class I gave sitted in a chair, trying to not hurt my feet more.

The first lesson was about Remembering C++ and Advanced C++ with meta-programing with templates. the file with all lessons about c++ is in the resources page, also worried about the feet and the stolen backpack, I went back to the airport, they have located the guy that grabbed my backpack by mistake, because he forgot his on the airplane cabin, but his mother was terrified that he could get lost in a city that he doesn’t know so well, after all, he was too young to walk around and go to the airport to give back my backpack. In the end he was 23, but who am I to say that he was not that young? I phoned them and they told me that they could only give me back my back pack in the next day, then I got pissed off, and almost lost my temper. I said ‘sudo, woman, give me back my backpack.’ if you change ‘sudo’ by ‘if you don’t get me my backpack with everything inside today, I’ll go there with the police’, you will understand everything that happened. and Magically, my backpack appeared with everything just one hour later.

I got happy, I got back to my friend’s apartment ( inside a commercial building. ) talked him about that history and went to sleep untill next morning, where the Qt Course was going to start. ( if you want to take a look about the 60h Qt course, it’s on our resource page ).

The Course at Petrobras transcourred well, I teached them for two weeks in the main topics of Qt, like QtCore, QtConcurrent, GraphicsView, Widgets, Model View, Scripting, Animation Framework. I Had only 5 students, that were being trained to train the rest, one of those Students was a Professor of a nearby University, and invited me to give a talk about KDE and Qt there, that’s what I’ll be doing today at 19 pm, in the UniverCidade near the Carioca Station, if anybody that reads this wanna go, feel free to. He loved the KDE-Edu initiative, and already moved his students to help the project. the debut of the Univercidade – Edu team should happen this year ( I hope. ).

After three weeks lecturing, I’m exausted. it was a nice, fun and enjoyable experience, that I’ll sure wanna do again. but cant rest now, there’s the talk on UniverCidade that I need to finish

After waiting a couple of weeks until students return from vacation we finally could enjoy a nice sunset followed by some beers, acarajés, and of course celebrate our beloved newborn, talk about free software and amenities in general. The party took place at “Largo da Dinha”, neighborhood of “Rio Vermelho” – quite popular place for bohemians (only by coincidence is in the neighborhood where I live ).

There were four persons there, Sandro (the owner of the house) Tomaz (The big,skinny and nerdy one), Alexandre Amoedo Amorim ( also know as OpenGL ) and Romário ( the one helping Kikri ). It was a nice meeting, altougth we didn’t really programmed anything for KDE there, we talked a lot about K, and it was decided to port Alele’s Conclusion Project to KDE ( A Music Learning program ), Romário started a new plasmoid, Sandro and I debated about the differences between Europe and Brazil in desire to participate in Free Software Movements, and I will do a talk at Sandro’s university on it.

It was good to see some familiar faces.

Largo da Dinha (Rio Vermelho)

A comunidade KDE disponibilizou a versão 4.6 dos seus workspaces, aplicações e plataforma de desenvolvimento, trazendo novos recursos para utilização flexível do Plasma Desktop (agrupamento de widgets e melhor gerenciamento de activities, dentre outros), diversas melhorias de desempenho do Plasma Netbook, utilização de rotas geográficas no Marble, integração do Gwenview e Ksnapshot com redes sociais, desenvolvimento de Plasma Widgets com QML, melhor suporte a bluetooth e o primeiro lançamento do build target “mobile”, que permite a compilação e configuração do KDE particularmente voltada para dispositivos móveis.

No dia 12/02, sabádo, estaremos a partir das 17h, no Largo da Dinha (Rio Vermelho), para trocar idéias sobre o KDE e software livre, comemorar, tomar umas cervejinhas e comer um acarajé. Todos são bem-vindos, apareçam !

before anyone asks why does it have buttons in the background, it’s just a test app to show what I was doing.

I was yesterday at #qt trying to figure out how to do that, aseigo had already told me that it was possible  by using a QGraphicsView as the mask widget with a transparent background, so I did this:

this was doing almost, but not quite, not what I wanted. It correctly paced the QGraphicsView on top of the widgets, no scalling, but it was opaque. then Leo Franchi came to the rescue.

that way, the QGraphicsView was alpha-transparent on top of my widgets, and a nice mask-effect was given.

but beware that this approach does not handle resizing since the item does not belong to any QLayout, not a problem with Qt, since you can manage to make that happen using a eventFilter:

It’s on my scratch area because since the project was born as an application, it’s not yet being compiled as a library, but as soon as I fix this, it’ll go to playground. Until that happens, there are 4 samples inside the repository, showing how to create add static and dynamic pages, files and how to use forms. Most things are already implemented, but any feedback/help is welcome.

My current plan is to:

1. Fully convert the build to generate a shared lib
2. Update the implementation to use d-pointers
3. Finish the cookie support in the API
4. Add support for file upload

After this, it’ll be ready for some real tests, and I’ll try to port some existing apps to it and fix or improve things as needed.

Summarizing:

The year for KDE started with the 1st 16 – hour Qt course in USP ( Universidade São Paulo ), wich had a nice participation ( the list of studants got full in the first day of inscriptions and I had to extend the number of Participants )

after that we did the Akademy – Brazil with almost all KDE contribuitors in here in this southern country, a few like Boiko didn’t appeared, come on man, let’s go to the next – The event was an effort to strength our laces in the community, Brazil is a *huge* country, and meeting a fellow developer from more than a thousand kilometers away is  important.

Akademy – br was a success and made one thing real, we could focus on developer training, more groups were formed:

• KDE com Chimarrão, in Rio Grande do Sul ( With Wagner Reck, my partner in Rocs )
• KDE Piaui, in Piaui (With Aracele Torres, our history-bachelor, soon to be master )
• KDE Sanca ( with Vitor Boschi from the embedded HTTP server for KDE )

This year the KDE participation in events and forums was *huge*, we attended in more than 10 congresses on OpenSouce, big events like FISL and LatinoWare, small events like FliSol, SoliSC and emerging events like FSL-BH ( Free Software Belo Horizonte ) and ENSL ( Encontro Nordestinno de Software Livre )

Sandro Andrade and me gave more than 8 courses on Qt / KDE Technologies for free in different states / universities, and the reception was awesome, in the ENSL it was so crowded that the event was not allowing more people in the room.

on LatinoWare we closed the event participation in 2010, for this is the last one of the year. and a similar success, the first talk, at 10a.m. got more than 250 persons, in a 200 person room, same thing happened and the event was not allowing more people in the room for the talk “Efficient Programming, 2 games in 40 minutes” that I ministred with Qt / KDE.

The Good:

• Event Participation was nearly 90% of all opensource events, thanks to Amanda, Sandro, Wagner, Camila, Tomaz ( Me ), Aracele and all others that always were happy to go.
• Communities were build and are stronger and anger to do continue growing.
• the KDE Hackers that in a past were Helio, Piacentini and Boiko are now more than 10 individuals
• The booth was crowded even without things to give or sell, for we had 5 developers there talking passionately about K.

The Bad:

• Our artistic team led us down, we don’t have an artistic team pratically. if you are an artist and lives in Brazil, hello hello.
• The ‘Internship Tryout’ was a not even close to success, I’m gonna try next year with a different student.
• the Promo couldn’t manage to go to every congress, so in the 2 bigger ones, we just had a ‘join the game’ folder and 4 – 5 developers talking in the booth.

All in all, KDE has much more strength than it had a few years ago, and it’s continuing to grow.

ENSL 2010 is over and if I had to pick up a word to define the general audience that would be: commitment. Almost 600 participants filled out the meeting and Forum KDE Brazil talks and all 50 places to Qt and Plasmoid Development short-courses were completely taken, some people were sitting on the floor making around 60-70 persons. It was great to see how people are increasingly getting interested in KDE, Qt/QML, and mobile development. There was also the VII Forum GNOME and we are planning some joint panel for next year’s ENSL.

We are quite glad to promote KDE at ENSL and excited about making things even better next year.

Plasmoid development short-course

Ok, cut … Right after the Northeast Edition of 3rd Forum KDE Brazil we went to Foz do Iguaçu, for the VII Latin-American Conference on Free Software, the second biggest open source conference in Brazil. After getting a 3 hours delayed flight to Curitiba I reach the hotel today at 3a.m. With just some sleeping hours we were heading to PTI (Pólo Tecnológico de Itaipú) – value for the Latinoware 2010.

As usual we plan beforehand a set of talks and short-courses to be presented at Latinoware and again we put it under the KDE Forum Brazil umbrella, this time as the Latin-American Edition. I’ve heard that Ronny (KDE Peru) had some complications to get his flight to Brazil but hopefully he is coming tomorrow early morning and we’ll try to re-schedule his “3D Development with Qt and KDE” talk.

In the last minute, we’re notified about an available KDE booth at the meeting, not as fully decorated as the last year one but at least we are able to gather people together to show off the coolest KDE features. So, I’m here in the very first day of Latinoware, we already had the Tomaz talk about agile game development with Qt, the Adriano’s one about rich interfaces for mobile and right now I’m going to Camila talk about contributing to KDE.

KDE booth at Latinoware 2010

It’s been awhile since last post. I’ve been really bogged down in recent weeks in light of my Ph.D. research, but I can’t stay long without gearing my head. This year has been quite fruitful for KDE Brazil in terms of consolidating our five local groups and having them starting their own efforts to show off all the beauty and glory of KDE (hehe). After the birth of our beloved Akademy-BR (last April in Salvador-BA) and with the traditional Forum KDE Brazil in its 3rd edition at FISL 2010 (last July in Porto Alegre-RS), we articulated a more integrated and stronger approach for the 4th Brazilian Northeastern Free Software Meeting (ENSL) and 7th Latinoware. After getting dizzy looking for a name and format for the KDE presence in such events (including the terrific Aracele’s suggestion: 1st FUCK , something like 1st Forum of Users and Contributors of KDE – adapted from portuguese) we ended up opting to strengthen our Forum KDE Brazil overarching brand by localizing it in specialized editions. While Akademy-BR goals include bringing together contributors from all over the country to discuss topics and have some sprint-like atmosphere, Forum KDE Brazil has been the major opportunity to spread the hot topics and trends of KDE and also get some feedback from the general audience. For that purpose we are about to have the 3rd Forum KDE Brazil – Northeastern Edition at ENSL and 3rd Forum KDE Brazil – Latin-American Edition at Latinoware. Yes, three gatherings in three very strategic regions of Brazil.

ENSL is the largest free software meeting in northeastern Brazil, integrating states with very active communities devoted to KDE, Gnome, ArchLinux, digital art, among others. It grew up from the Free Software Festival of Bahia – a smaller meeting started in 2003 and in which I was presenting a short-course about Qt(v2.?)/KDevelop3. Nowadays ENSL receives speakers from all over the country (and some from overseas this year) and the organizing team expects roughly 500-600 attenders in the two days of event. Besides the main track for general talks, ENSL encompasses our two-day Forum KDE Brazil and also the 7th Forum Gnome and that’s of course great (any similarities … mere coincidence) .

I met Lamarque and Amanda in the plane from Salvador and we arrived in Natal about 2 p.m. Some of the other guys were already here: Filipe, Aracele e Chicão and we should meet Helio, Paulo Rômulo, and Anselmo tomorrow in the venue. ENSL has yielded a great expectation in the local free software community as we can see in ENSL profiles at Identica and Twitter. In the first day of ENSL we are going to have talks about the KDE community, translation activities, development, KDE and Summer of Code, and KDE development for mobile platforms. The second day is devoted to short-courses on Qt, Plasma widgets development, and D-Bus. In the closing we’ll raffle some swags probably by asking some curious questions about KDE

With no time to breathe, three days after ENSL is over, we head to Foz do Iguaçu to the 7th  Latin-American Conference on Free Software. KDE Brazil has actively been participating in last three editions of Latinoware and we had the pleasure of having Anne-Marie and Adrian with us last year. This year we draw the first steps towards integrating the KDE communities in Latin America by having Ronny Aizcorbe, from Peru, presenting a talk about 3D Development with Qt and KDE. Helio has been in Chile some weeks ago for a KDE talk in their major free software conference and we hope to have a wider participation from Argentina, Peru and Chile next year.

I Gave a talk about KDE Scientific Appplications, well, not just KDE, I also talked about Mendeley since it’s one of the best Research tools that I know of.The presentation can be found here ( in portuguese ).

KDE Science talk, quite  alot of people in there. and I got a good feedback, time to stop doing cute presentations and focus on serious ones.

But that’s about to change. It was given to me the task to adopt a quite special orphan app, known as PlasMate. Long abandoned, it is a very interesting project to work on, and it has not received the attention it deserves.

So, there’s no better way to learn more than to rewrite a good piece of code! Mr. aseigo kindly pointed out what needs to be done or re-done, and I’m right now working on revamping the UI: the old toolbox was thrown away and the functionalities were separated in KActions. Some of the original widgets are going to be rethought of and rebuilt as well, such as the file list widget.

And in a couple of weeks later an university from the same State Made a really nice panel about an introductory class on Multimedia Art.

I will leave them here by now… and start thinking about other thing… When we, the fellow KDE guardians of truth and justice sweat our asses of creating a Festival ( and that’s, by the way, not easy at all ) it’s really common to the universities, insitutions or what ever, tried to dismiss everything that we did and takes the whole work as if it were theirs, three examples.

• KDE-MG team and Ubuntu UAI did the First FSL-BH in september 2009, I was there to help them. I see how they worked hard on it. And in the end, the institution made a panel “FSL-BH proudly presented to you by ESP-BH”. WHAT? not even one word about the guys that actually made de event? Hello ESP, you just lend us the local to use for the event, nothing more.  you are a collaborator, not the creator.
• KDE-MG team and Ubuntu-UAI did the second FSL-BH in november 2009, I was not there to help them this time, but the same thing happened. “II FSL-BH proudly presented to you by UNA-BH”, HELLO? ( in portuguese, the annoucement, here. as you can see, not a word about KDE-MG or Ubuntu-UAI were given in the annoucement, tsc.
• KDE-MG and Open Source Betim did the III FSL-BH, and as usual someone tried to get the intelectual property of them.

This is sad, really, you should be universities, trying to make the world a better place and showing that you are a place to create minds, build thinkers, and not try to get something that you didn’t did as yours.

Anyway, after creating a demo for Kiriki, I started working on the hint feature, very common in another games. In this case, I used Kiriki’s AI itself to give the hint, asking it how would it play and, then, showing it to the used instead of actually playing.

That’s a good start.

There’s been something else as well. Since I changed my account from http to ssh, I seem not to be able to properly checkout KDE code (from svn.kde.org). I am able to connect to the server, download/update some files and then my connection is closed all of a sudden (svn: Network connection closed unexpectedly). Although my connection seemed trouble-free, I was clarified by tomaNA, who asked me to run some connection tests, and discovered that there is a strong packet loss over my ISP hops. I’m not really sure on what to do other than call the ISP and bug them, but they will probably tell me to check if the cables are connected and reset my computer.

So, as I was unable to properly get some fresh code, Tomaz asked me to study the Model/View Framework, for something he had in mind. He suggested the creation of a PlasmaListView for plasmoids such as the Kate Sessions, in order to make it look better on Plasma. I’m into it now and hope to have some results soon. Model/View programming is new to me (I’m just a padawan), so I’d be glad to have some suggestions or tips from the old-school KDE veterans See ya!

I just moved again, from Florianopolis to São Paulo, and so I’m not yet fully setup here, so my internet connection *really* suck a lot, but that doesn’t keep me from working. talking about Work, I moved from a really cool company that does Asterisk Boards here in Brazil, Khomp to a really cool company that dows Qt around the world, KDAB. I’m now co-worker of Nuno Pinheiro, Guilliermo Amaral and David Faure, oh my… *-*

A new era is born in KDE now, for the first time ever there is an Intern working for 4 hours per day in kde-related projects with k’approval ( Thanks Cornelius o/ ), his name is Alex Raymond, I’m mentoring him in Plasma for 2 weeks now, getting his used to the basecode and fixing a lot of small bugs on the plasmoids on the way, the plan is to move him to something bigger in the future ( any ideas? )

There’s also a new mailing list that I’m in charge ( with Nightrose ) that’s almost dead since the beginning ( my fault, really, I got a complete lack of focus since I got back from Akademy ) but it will start rocking soon, since I’m doing a lot of things here that I will need to talk with somebody.

About gsoc, my studant keeps rocking, he improved the code, and made the whole app much more significant than it was before. Rocs will now not be a “Graph Theory Application” as I talked in all those months, but a Data Structure Application, and I’m sure it will be one of the KDE – Killer Apps for applied science. stay tooned.

As I kept playing it through some boring class (no, Sandro, it wasn’t yours!), I asked him, “Can I have more tiles? Like… to make it harder?” He grinned in an conspicuously evil way and said, “No. But you could make it yourself.”

So that was my first contribution to KDE: a changeable number of pieces, a randomizer, and a color chooser. Nowadays, I am a bit more experienced, and the same Tomaz threatened kindly invited me to work on KDE at a daily basis as an intern under his guidance. He let me choose where to work and get used with KDE development.

“Fifteen Puzzle.” I decided to spend my early hacking days to shelter the orphaned plasmoid, and here’s what it looks like now:

Changes include:

• Fixed the old positioning, which generated only unsolvable puzzles.
• Chronometer running (just shuffle and solve it to know your time).
• Theme color support.
• Images!
• Bugfixes and minor tweaks.

There is still some to be done, and I hope to end it shortly. I know that it isn’t much, but I feel happy for it.  My endless thanks for Tomaz, due to his enormous, endless, and incredibly lasting patience support 24/7.

As usual the International Forum on Free Software (FISL) took place in Porto Alegre from 21-24 July and gathered together roughly 7500 attendees (students, enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, and govern representatives) from 16 countries. About 500 activities (talks, short-courses, and community meetings), 250 exhibitors, and an organizing team with 376 persons (including volunteers, SoftwareLivre Association staff, and hired press office and services) made FISL 11 one of the largest Free Software events in South America. FISL is always a great opportunity to meet new people and widely disseminate what is happening in the KDE world.

We (KDE Brasil) usually coordinate in advance about which talk proposals we want to submit, trying to come up with interesting topics on where KDE is heading to and some roadmap to guide potential new contributors and show off why we are a pretty amazing community We usually got about half of the proposals accepted for presentation, activities in FISL program range from highly geek topics with non-sense titles like “The ant meets the elephant, or something like that” to educational, bussiness-oriented, and government related talks. So, every year we get a felling of not enough room for KDE at FISL but we’ll always be there , promoting our community and inviting fresh blood to join the game.

Basically we had four KDE-related talks and meetings this year, in addition to the already expected top-talks about Qt from the Trolls and INdT guys. For some still unknown reason our talks are always scheduled to some inconvenient slots like 9 a.m. in the day after the FISL party or in parallel with THE most expected speaker but … yes … So, in a brief:

• KDE Lovelace: free software by women. Unfortunately the guys from KDE-MG (Amanda, Lamarque, Felipe, Anderson e Daniel) couldn’t attend FISL this year. Amanda would present this talk with Camila but Tomaz ended up helping her in the last minute. There were three talks about women in free software at FISL 11, the biggest one – in the same slot of ours – brought together 200 participants. Damn Sounds like a plan a unified big women meeting next year.
• 3rd Brazilian KDE Users and Developers Meeting. That’s becoming a somehow “traditional” event at FISL and it’s a nice opportunity to provide recent news to general audience and receive some feedback about how users and developers have experienced KDE SC. In spite of the early morning assigned slot it was a fruitful meeting mainly because a new KDE regional group should come soon, organized by Domingos. Furthermore, it was a chance to promote the “Join the Game” campaign, to spread the technical advances, and say “join us”, we are a great and enjoyable family.
• Develop your JavaScript Plasmoid in 20 Minutes. I submitted this proposal some minutes before FISL deadline. My other submition about “KDE Contribution Roadmap and Opportunities” wasn’t accepted but anyway I got a chance to fish that “I-dont-like-C++-even-with-Qt” developer or even those with no technical background who would find in JavaScript their way to KDE contribution. I think it somehow worked despite of happening again 9 a.m. , people were impressed with how easy one could bring their beloved Plasma application to life with fancy animations in 4.5
• 2nd Brazilian Google Summer of Code Students Meeting. Even though it isn’t a KDE dedicated event I wanted to organize this second GSoC meeting at FISL motivated by the great audience responsiveness last year. It’s been a forum to share our experiences, tell people “You can !”, and, of course, talk a little bit about Season of KDE and our achievements along the last years. It’s pretty cool to coordinate with previously unknown GSoC-partners and provide a very pleasant meeting. Next year, though, I should delegate that meeting coordination to someone else and really focus on marketing KDE. Every year we get more expertise about FISL, how it works and try to adapt our approach to a more efficient one.

I’m really sorry, no good enough pictures about that. I was virtually exhausted taking care of such meetings, talks, promo stuff, etc. Ok, our booth. Larger booth areas at FISL are usually quite expensive and we have been using the free user groups area for the KDE booth in last years. It’s a cool area that can bring good results if well spent. We haven’t registered KDE Brasil as a user group this year since Thiago has kindly offered a joint booth for Qt and KDE and that would be great. A very large Qt poster and TV have occupied the whole booth though and we luckly could find an empty area to hang up our banner. Thiago, thanks again dude !

It’s been a busy time since I arrived from Tampere. After applying final exams to my students and publishing the scores, I’ve just had time to translate the “Join the Game” banner and have it printed out a couple of hours before a left Salvador.

I really love it, colors and design are amazing even though some people took some time to realize that was the KDE booth. The first impression was: “Which game ? Can I play here ? ” just followed by a “Ohh, I see !”. Do we need/have a pretty cool KDE general banner ? Maybe I should have fixed the new KDE Brasil logo right above the Join the Game banner (thanks Anderson from KDE-MG, you rock man !):

So … no t-shirts, stickers, leaflets this time but we are working to have this stuff easily available to the upcoming conferences. After all, the main reward to attend FISL in undoubtly to meet cool people, talk about KDE, and see at least one or two guys and girls willing to carry on the KDE flag to their new regional groups.

Acontece no dia 07 de agosto a partir das 20h a Release Party do KDE 4.5 aqui em Salvador. A festa será no Sebo Praia dos Livros no Porto da Barra e contará com a apresentação do espetáculo erótico-literário-musical “A Saga Sexual de Agrippino Motta”. Vamos tomar umas cervejinhas, encontrar pessoas legais e comemorar o lançamento de mais uma versão bacana do KDE.

Cheguei em porto alegre um dia antes do Sandro, hospedado na casa da Camila Ayres (shelikescode.wordpress.com ) que também é uma colaboradora ativa do KDE.Primeiro dia foi completamente morto no FISL, ainda estavam montando a parte de exposição, então as palestras ficaram lotadas. não fui pra nenhuma, organizando, correndo atrás e oferecendo balinhas de funcho com sal para os organizadores do evento.

O KDE não havia se inscrito como participante pois estavamos todos voando do outro lado do mundo, e o pessoal que ficou no brasil não conseguiu se mobilizar, ou por falta de tempo, ou por falta de grana, ou por falta de vergonha ( caso eu estivesse aqui, com certeza seria esse ultimo ), então como não tinhamos estande, fomos procurar a criatura que tomava conta dessa area no FISL, e achei. pedi por favorzinho um estande pra ela, e me apossei do lado do estande do Texto Livre e com o povo do Pandorga na frente.

Pessoal do Texto Livre e Pandorga já são amigos de FISLS e LatinoWares passados, geralmente o destino nos cologa bem próximos, o que é muito bom já que são amaveis e boa gente. Texto livre tem, pelo que eu vi, uma vitima de Linux que é o Leleo, e várias outras vitimas de LETRAS! Usuarias de Linux, que cursam Letras, que trabalham com Letraas, e que provavelmente tem uma caligrafia linda, mas ainda não vi nada escrito a mão delas.

Segundo dia, Palestras, A Palestra da Camila Ayres e Amanda sobre colaborar com colaboradoras ( que é o que fazemos aqui no live blue, e o que fazem no kde – lovelace ) ficou no mesmo horario da palestra da guria do google sobre… O MESMO FUCKING TEMA! ( ai fisl, deu mole. ) dae a da guria da google lotou, até porque ela é bem conhecida no cenário mundial, e a da camila e da amanda não tinha mais que uns 20 gatos pingados, mas houve a palestra assim de qualquer forma, e quem assistiu gostou, e isso importa mais.

Huberto – criador da primeira lista de KDE e Qt do Brasil, se reaproximou do grupo e diz qu vai voltar a ativa.

Amy – Mais uma menina, Mais uma de promo. atacou meu computador e começou a desenhar no inkscape, tem talento. finalmente tenho um icone pra o Rocs.

Herolt – Pai da Amy, que coordena o FLISOL de Brasilia, um dos maiores flisois do brasil, vamos ter uma colaboração mais junta agora para oferecer cursos de programação em KDE e palestras pelos organizadores do projeto.

Fui entrevistado por duas pessoas, uma para a Radio e uma para a TV, não sei quando vou sair ou se vão deixar esse rostinho lindo aparecer nas telas, mas falei sobre a importância de se manter o conhecimento como livre e gratuito de qualquer pagamento. Ensinar por prazer de ensinar.

Na conferência o destaque vai para as keynotes “MeeGo redefining the Linux desktop landscape” por Valtteri Halla (Nokia) e “Reaching For Greatness” por Aaron Seigo (KDE), e as palestras “The 7 principles of successful open source communities” por Thomas Thym, “Plasma sneaks in your pocket” por Artur Duque de Souza e Alexis Menard e “Social Games” por Dan Leinir Turthra Jensen. Além da conferência serão realizados encontros (sprints) focados em sub-projetos tais como animações do Plasma, QML, Nepomuk, Telepathy, KDevelop e Gluon.

O Akademy 2009, realizado em conjunto com o GUADEC no Gran Canaria Desktop Summit contou com uma participação de dois membros do Live Blue e o pessoal do Instituto Nokia de Tecnologia (INdT). Este ano teremos a maior presença brasileira de todos os Akademies: estarão presentes Sandro Andrade e Tomaz Canabrava do Live Blue, Amanda Castro e Lamarque Souza do KDE-MG, Camila Ayres do KDE-RS, Helio Castro, Mauricio Piacentini, além do pessoal cativo do INdT.

There are a lot of code to write yet, but I’d like to get some advices about it. Thanks in advance.

We’re very pleased to properly formalize through this blog the creation of thegroup of KDE users and contributors from Piauí. It was officialy formed during Akademy-Br 2010, held in April in the State of Bahia, and got stronger after the activities about KDE that took place on FLISOL 2010 Teresina.

By creating this group we intend to help, in all possible aspects, the development, improvement and promotion of KDE SC and free software in general. In order to achieve that goal, we’re assisted by many supporters from many areas of study: Leonardo and Angela (Art students); André (Pharmacy student); Bianca (Chemistry student); Filipe, Gustavo e Francisco (Computer Sciences students); Aracele (History student); Sérgio (Philosophy student) and Antão (Jurist).

To begin with it we’re going to study coding, because everyone shows interest in contributing to KDE with good codes. But we’re also dedicated to provide the community with translations, promotions, artworks and bug reportings. We look forward to properly representing KDE in Piauí so we can show people what it has got, and why we should use it and help it.

Our logo mixes the cog, the official KDE symbol, with the carnaúba tree – one of the plants which represent our brazilian State. It’s been created by our art designer and supporter Pedro Leonardo, and from now on will be used as the official symbol of KDE-PI.

No Qt DevDays do ano passado, em Munique, o roadmap foi aberto à comunidade e várias sugestões foram coletadas. Desde o início o Qt tem sido um produto que abraçou sua comunidade de desenvolvedores e com ela colaborou o máximo possível.

Importantes passos tais como o modelo de contribuição que nós apresentamos no ano passado têm levado isso cada vez mais adiante – nós recebemos e integramos centenas de contribuições desde a disponibilização deste canal.

Nós acreditamos que chegou a hora de levar esse modelo uma vez mais pra frente e tornar a nossa comunidade ainda mais influente através de uma mudança na forma com a qual o Qt é gerido – caminhando para um modelo de governança ainda mais aberto.

Adotando uma governança mais aberta fará com que o desenvolvimento e as decisões do Qt funcionem de forma mais parecida com os projetos convencionais de software livre. Com este modelo nossa comunidade irá desenvolver o Qt e realmente compartilhar o controle sobre as decisões relacionadas ao Qt e ao seu futuro.

Dentre outras coisas o novo modelo trará as seguintes mudanças:

• Discussões técnicas agora serão totalmente abertas;
• Decisões relacionadas ao nosso roadmap e cronogramas serão também abertas;
• A comunidade terá acesso ao nosso processo de garantia de qualidade (QA process).

O modelo será aplicado a todos os projetos atuais e novos no âmbito do Qt (estes podem ser vistos na página de roadmap do Qt). Estamos muito entusiasmados com o prospecto da open governance mas há muito a ser feito antes dele existir efetivamente.

O que acontece então a partir de agora ? O próximo passo que faremos será abrir a discussão na comunidade para determinar as especificidades do modelo.

Ao mesmo tempo que temos as nossas idéias sobre a forma com que esse modelo poderia funcionar, nós queremos que a comunidade que será parte disso tenha a chance de opinar sobre a forma com a qual este modelo de governança irá funcionar. O resultado final deve ser um modelo que funcione para o Qt e funcione também para a comunidade.

Estamos realmente na expectativa de refinar e implantar este modelo e levar o Qt ainda mais longe com esta estrutura de open governance.

But What’s the plan of KCall To Arms? Gather Students to hack on KDE? Hell no, too fast for that, KDE is not widely used in Brasil, because *nix is not widely used in brasil, so the first thing is to show the students and professors that they can have better working tools by using it.

Helio with his brother near the bus station, then we moved torwards the airport with tears in our eyes walking our way to São Paulo, where we would met another member of the KDE team, Alexandre Freitas. As unusual as it sounds, the airport was not crowded and we just had to wait for a couple of minutes till everything was ok. we Had a Great Flight to Porto, Portugal.

Then things started to annoy… First there was about 120 persons in the plane and just 2 police officers in Porto taking care of the visas, and also 3 girls that worked for the Airport trying to put some order in the chaos, but the chaos was already made. our connection was just 1h after the arrival, but it took 40 minutes for us to pass the line and run for the plane. Luckly we didn’t bringed any luggage, just our usual hand-bags. I said luckily ? We lost the connection, I didn’t just lost the connection but but also my flight to London since I was going to get it in Genebra two hour after I arrived for a quick chat with some aquaitances in england. talked to EasyJet, but to remark the tickets I would spend 30% more than I already had spend buying it, and also talked to TAP and they said just ‘not my problem, we are not responsibles for the airport delaying you in the line’, and me? well, looks like I lost 126 euros, that’s more than 20% of my income. oh, well =/

Then I had a plan from Porto to Lisbon, and another to Lisbon to Genebra. In genebra we went to buy our train tickets:

“To Where?” – “Randa” – “Where?” – “Randa” – “Are you sure that this place does exists?” – “Pretty sure.” – guy does some search on the keyboard… – “Ah, yeah, it’s here, seems it’s 12h trip” – “WHAT?” – “Just Kidding, então, o preço é 120 euros cada.”, and he just talked portuguese with us in the Switzerland airport, talking about globalization…

We got into the train and the time passed by, in the last station Piercy, a guy from peru that looked like lost ( just as we where ) talked to us ‘KDE?’ and we all shake our hands, talked about groovy things till the train finally stopped and Mario Rescued us.

Three months has passed and there Dimpress 3D got his first cute face! We’ve developed a plugin structure and a plugin that describes a model for 3D presentations called Sliding Panels. The user interface needs a lot of improvements and we are working on that.In the next weeks we’ll present our solution in the college.

O Akademy, encontro internacional da comunidade KDE, acontecerá entre os dias 3 e 10 de julho deste ano em Tampere, Finlândia. Lá são esperados entusiastas de todos os tipos, desenvolvedores, usuários, tradutores, divulgadores e mais participantes da comunidade que se reunirão para discutir o KDE, seu presente e futuro, ideias de novos softwares e tecnologias, e mais.

A programação do evento acabou de sair e, mesmo que você não possa se deslocar até lá (estou incluso nesse grupo!), é legal dar uma olhada na grade e perceber os rumos que o projeto está tomando a partir dos assuntos que lá serão expostos.

Por exemplo, metade da programação do primeiro dia dedicado às conferências tratarão sobre dispositivos e tecnologias móveis, além de um keynote específico sobre o Meego, novo sistema operacional da Nokia + Intel baseado em Linux a ser usado em celulares, smathphones, netbooks e mais, que proverá suporte a tecnologia Qt. Isso significa que o KDE está dando passos firmes na direção desses dispositivos  – algo que já acontece, com o plasma-netbook e uma versão plasma mobile trabalhada no Tokamak 4.

Então pessoal, fica a dica da programação do Akademy para quem quiser “dar uma espiadinha” no futuro do KDE!

Os desenvolvedores do KDevelop anunciam a imediata disponibilidade do KDevelop 4.0, lançado em conjunto com a primeira versão do plugins PHP que fazem do KDevelop uma opção interessante para os desenvolvedores PHP.

Funcionalidades

KDevelop 4.0 já disponibiliza uma série de funcionalidades, mesmo embora algumas delas ainda não estejam prontas se comparado à versão 3.5, em função do tempo disponível. Em particular, nós nos preocupamos em construir uma excelente IDE para C++ ao invés de tentar integrar diversas linguagens de maneira incompleta. É claro que ainda é possível adicionar suporte a mais linguagens no KDevelop e estamos confiantes que isso é realmente mais fácil que antes: a melhor prova disso são os plugins PHP lançados em conjunto com o KDevelop 4.0.

Navegação de código, verificação de sintaxe e muito mais

As principais características de suporte ao C++ incluem navegação de código, que permite ir diretamente para declaração e highlighting semântico. Juntos eles tornam mais fácil a compreensão de novos códigos e a navegação em projetos maiores. O suporte à verificação de sintaxe e correção semi-automática com assistentes também está disponível, bem como code completion com suporte a classes, funções, templates, variáveis e include‘s. Para os desenvolvedores Qt existe um suporte completo para o mecanismo de sinais e slots. Você pode usar code completion para operações de conexão entre sinais e slots, com a listagem de itens baseada nos tipos dos argumentos da função ou assinaturas de sinais e slots.

Gerenciamento de projeto e navegação de código

Para gerenciamento de projeto nós atualmente temos suporte a CMake como plugin principal de buildsystem, possibilitando a construção de projetos a partir de makefiles customizados ou gerados automaticamente. O suporte ao CMake também possui algumas das funcionalidades acima descritas, de modo que você pode utilizar code completion, highlighting semântico e navegação de código também em arquivos CMake. A integração entre o C++ e CMake permite que novas classes sejam acrescentadas em projetos de forma semi-automática. Para facilitar a correção de erros o KDevelop permite ir direto aos erros no código. Além disso, você usar a ferramenta QuickOpen para navegar rapidamente para qualquer arquivo, classe ou função dos projetos abertos ou dentro do arquivo atualmente aberto.

Integração com o GDB

O suporte integrado ao GDB torna possível descobrir erros de runtime presentes no seu código. Você pode utilizar as funcionalidades básicas de breakpoint, passo a passo, pausa e visualização do call stack. Adicionalmente, com o uso do suporte a exibição do GDB, podemos apresentar vários tipos do Qt, KDE e STL em uma forma compreensível para os desenvolvedores. Dessa forma, uma QString irá exibir seu conteúdo real, uma QList apresentará um conjunto expansível de itens-filho, etc.

Documentação

Uma grande funcionalidade do KDevelop que estamos trabalhando é a integração de documentação. KDevelop exibe documentação de API do CMake e Qt como tooltips sobre as classes e funções, além de permitir você navegar para a documentação completa através de uma toolview.

Plugins PHP

O primeiro lançamento dos plugins para suporte ao PHP já vem com uma riqueza de recursos que facilitam parte do trabalho de um desenvolvedor web: erros de sintaxe são reportados à medida que você digita e os fontes do projeto são analisados semanticamente, incluindo comentários PHP Doc para dicas de tipos de parâmetros e valores de retorno. Além disso, os plugins disponibilizam code completion com sólido suporte a programação orientada a objetos. Nós também suportamos a navegação por contexto e highlighting semântico descritos acima, bem como integração de documentação PHP.net online e integração com a ferramenta QuickOpen e Class Browser.

Além do mini-curso do Chicão na parte da tarde, houve também, à noite, a minha palestra sobre o KDE. Minha primeira palestra falando sobre o azulzinho. Falei sobre o nascimento do projeto, suas características, sua comunidade e sobre como fazer parte dela e contribuir com o KDE.

Palestra sobre KDE

Essa foi a segunda vez que aconteceu um evento que falava sobre KDE aqui em Teresina. Creio que o público ficou ainda mais interessado em conhecer sobre o projeto. Algumas pessoas tiveram o primeiro contato com o KDE durante o install fest, que ocorreu pela manhã. Teve muito Mandriva com KDE instalado por lá.

Palestra sobre KDE

As nossas expectativas são muito boas, com certeza depois desse evento conseguiremos aglutinar mais forças para compor o recém-criado KDE-Pi. Até agora estamos com dois novos prováveis progamadores e um artwork para o KDE.

Ninguém é mais qualificado para falar sobre o estado atual do KDE que Aaron Seigo. Membro veterano do KDE e.V, organização alemã sem fins lucrativos que supervisiona o projeto, Seigo é o desenvolvedor líder do ambiente desktop do KDE. Semana passada, eu o entrevistei durante o Calgary Open Source Systems Festival (COSSFest), com uma platéia presente, sobre onde o KDE está hoje e para onde ele está caminhando.

De acordo com Seigo, as mudanças de grande escala que começaram dois anos atrás com o lançamento do KDE 4.0 estão praticamente terminadas. “Nós alcançamos este estágio com o lançamento do KDE 4.4, em janeiro, onde nós disponibilizamos um conjunto de novas funcionalidades para o desktop, algumas novas aplicações e melhorias substanciais no look-and-feel. Este é o ponto em que estamos. Mas para onde estamos indo ? Esta é sempre uma pergunta difícil. Uma vez que você chegou em um lugar, para onde você deseja ir ?

A resposta do Seigo à sua própria questão é que o KDE está atualmente se movendo em três direções: adição de funcionalidades ao desktop (tanto pequenas features quanto em aplicações específicas), extensão do conceito de social desktop e a adequação do KDE para execução em toda plataforma de hardware possível. Cada uma dessas direções merece uma pequena história.

Ajustes finais do desktop KDE

Em contraste a algumas versões anteriores do KDE4, Seigo diz, “agora nós temos as funcionalidades que as pessoas esperavam e nós demos a elas muitas novas possibilidades”. O próximo passo, ele diz, é “dar ênfase à forma e ao acabamento, melhorar o desempenho e aplicar todos os nossos esforços na estabilidade”.

Algo nesta direção já pode ser percebido na versão atual (4.4), com a adição de novas funcionalidades tais como a capacidade de agrupar diversas janelas em uma só. Entretanto, janelas agrupadas são somente o início, Seigo fala.

Ele lembra que versões futuras irão disponibilizar uma barra de tarefas que conhece as janelas agrupadas e permitirá que usuários as salve para uso em sessões futuras. De forma similar, ele vê as funcionalidades para geo-localização adicionadas recentemente como um primeiro passo em direção a uma versão do KDE que irá mudar automaticamente o conteúdo do desktop de acordo com a localização onde você está – por exemplo, utilizando um conjunto de ícones e arquivos quando você liga o computador no seu escritório e outro conjunto quando você está na sua casa.

Adicionalmente, muitas mudanças estão também acontecendo em aplicações específicas do KDE. Por exemplo, o KOffice recebeu patrocínio da NOKIA para desenvolver um visualizador de documentos para a plataforma móvel Maemo5. “NOKIA”, Aaron diz, “está investindo muito, o visualizador não é só rápido, mas também pode importar e exportar arquivos nos formatos Open Documento and Microsoft Office, então se você criou um documento no OpenOffice.org ele funcionará perfeitamente no seu telefone móvel”.

Outro exemplo são os novos planos para o Krita, programa para gráficos rasterizados (matriciais) do KOffice. Por um longo tempo, Aaron diz, a equipe do Krita não sabiam se eles estavam desenvolvendo uma aplicação para desenho, para finalização de fotos digitais, ou seja lá o que for.

Em um sprint recente do KDE, o Krite recrutou o perito em design Peter Sikking, que tem também trabalhado no GIMP, para ajudar o projeto a encontrar uma direção.

“Ao final da experiência, eles decidiram que o que eles realmente queriam era um software para suportar processos naturais de desenho”, Seigo fala – ou seja, uma aplicação que simula com a maior fidelidade possível aspectos tais como pinceladas e mistura de cores. “Outras coisas tais como finalização de fotos digitais são implementadas por plugins, funcionalidades que você pode adicionar posteriormente”.

“Outra área interessante de desenvolvimento atualmente é o suporte a negócios”, Aaron fala. “Em áreas tais como groupware, o KDE está criando um programa chamado OpenChange, uma completa reimplementação do Microsoft Exchange. Na verdade a equipe esteve na conferência do Samba este ano e eu sempre pensei nisso com o Samba para Exchange. O KDE está sendo portado para o novo framework Akonadi (gerenciamento de informações pessoais) então, em um futuro não tão distante, você será capaz de escolher o seu servidor, incluindo o Exchange. Isso é realmente bacana para nós”.

O KDE e o Social Desktop

A segunda direção é o uso crescente do desktop social. De acordo com Seigo, esta tendência começou com a chegada do Nepomuk, o desktop social semântico que mantém um banco de dados de arquivos e suas tags. Nepomuk é originalmente um projeto acadêmico, mas graças ao patrocínio da Mandriva, o KDE foi um dos primeiros a implementá-lo no desktop.

“Isto nos levou a um estágio onde você pode adicionar tags aos seus arquivos, anotá-los, realizar buscas por eles e criar um timeline, no gerenciador de arquivos, para visualizar a ordem na qual você utilizou suas coisas”, Aaron fala. “Isso é bacana, mas é somente a ponta do iceberg. A meta final é conectar todos esses meta-dados com as pessoas e com a forma com a qual as pessoas trabalham”.

O KDE já inclui widgets para seguir pessoas via OpenDesktop.org e para acessar a Base de Conhecimento do KDE, mas nos projetos futuros poderemos ver ferramentas para manter contato com amigos e contribuidores KDE, ou até mesmo procurar por respostas a problemas de hardware enviadas por pessoas que possuem o mesmo equipamento.

Seigo chama essa tendência de “livrar a web do navegador”, adicionando que “é uma vergonha que a web permaneça presa ao navegador”. Em contraste direto ao ChromeOS do Google, que substitui o desktop por um navegador, a meta do KDE é distribuir o acesso aos recursos web por todo o desktop já existente.

“Isso significa utilizar tecnologias web no nosso desktop“, Seigo explica. “É realmente eliminar as fronteiras entre o que é local o que não é local, e ainda mais importante, seguindo o espírito do software livre, colocando o controle e a escolha nas mãos do usuário”.

Novas plataformas de hardware e suas influências

A maior direção atual do KDE é a sua extensão a novas plataformas. O KDE já anunciou o Plasma Netbook, uma interface específica para netbooks que Seigo afirma que possui “cerca de 99% do mesmo codebase do desktop tradicional”.

Agora o KDE está se expandindo para outras plataformas de hardware também. “Acabamos de iniciar o desenvolvimento de um desktop para plataformas móveis”, Aaron inclui. “Estamos trabalhando em uma interface móvel voltada para telefones e PDA’s. Nossa plataforma alvo é o MeeGo mas estamos também trabalhando com o Jax10 que é baseados nas tecnologias Intel. Estamos também trabalhando em um media center. Então, ao final, nós teremos essa coleção de ambientes para uso em computadores desktop, netbooks, tables e plataformas móveis.

Um resultado dessa integração de hardwares que já está surtindo efeito é a influência dos netbooks e dispositivos móveis nos ambientes desktop tradicionais. Tamanho de tela, memória RAM disponível e tamanho do disco rígido sempre impõem limites no projeto da interface, mesmo embora as diferenças de hardware entre dispositivos portáteis e estações de trabalham venham diminuindo com o tempo.

Ainda assim, as diferenças ainda existem. Como um exemplo, Seigo lembra que um mouse é uma ferramenta precisa demais para um dispositivo móvel.

“Isso leva a coisas tais como ter um conjunto de widgets clicáveis”, Seigo fala. “de modo que, se eu tenho uma lista de coisas, eu devo ser capaz de clicar com meu próprio dedo. E pelo fato de utilizarmos as mesmas tecnologias da nossa interface de usuário primária, nós já temos widgets clicáveis no desktop também. Nós provavelmente nunca teríamos investido tempo implementando widgets clicáveis se nós estivéssemos focando somente no desktop“.

Outras mudanças e lições aprendidas

Outras mudanças que estão acontecendo são externas ao software. Ao perceber que KDE não mais se refere somente ao desktop, mas a uma comunidade comprometida em construir tecnologias relacionadas, o projeto anunciou um rebranding no último outono com o objetivo de refletir o que realmente o projeto é.

Em um futuro próximo nós também veremos uma migração do SVN para o Git. Seigo antecipa que a maior acessibilidade do Git irá diminuir as barreiras dos contribuidores.

Alguns projetos do KDE como Amarok já migraram para o Git e, de acordo com Seigo, “estão caminhando a um passo incrível e a principal razão é que o número de contribuidores aumentou”. Seigo prevê “uma semana onde todos os projetos estarão migrando. Que diabos estou fazendo ? O KDE possui mais de cinco milhões de linhas de código e 58 Gb de arquivos para transferir. Mas certamente, quando todos tiverem migrado, o desenvolvimento do KDE será ainda mais rápido”.

Mas, quaisquer que sejam as mudanças planejadas para o KDE, Seigo afirma que elas acontecerão com um mínimo de problemas. Em particular, Seigo fala que, pelo fato de o KDE4 ter sido projetado para ser mais facilmente modificado que as suas versões anteriores, uma explosão de código é um problema menos provável porque soluções deselegantes para superar limitações hard-coded serão dificilmente necessárias.

Além disso, “em casos de sobrecarga, nós desabilitamos a funcionalidade em run-time se a bateria possui pouca carga ou se o computador é muito lento. Você perde algumas features bacanas mas continua tendo um sistema totalmente funcional”.

Seigo expressa alguma preocupação sobre outra revolta dos usuários como a que aconteceu com o KDE 4.0. Entretanto, ele atribui a revolta em parte pelo interesse das distros em serem a primeira a oferecer o novo ambiente e, em outra parte, por uma inevitabilidade.

“Nós temos um hábito ruim no software livre em geral que, sempre que um desenvolvimento necessário acontece (algo que tinha de ser feito), nós não somos bons em criar novos produtos baseados no que foi feito. Nós simplesmente dizemos: aqui está. O tornamos disponível e verificamos como ele se comporta. As distros realmente precisam melhorar a forma como eles lidam com tais coisas porque o desenvolvimento não pode parar. Nós precisamos fazer isso todos os anos e as distros têm de aprender a lidar com isso. Não é um problema exclusivo do KDE, nós vimos a mesma coisa com o PulseAudio.

E quando o KDE5 estará disponível ? Seigo afirma que o número da versão poderia mudar para mante-la sincronizada com o Qt mas atualmente isso é pouco provável.

“Nós estamos talvez na metade do caminho do que pensamos alcançar no KDE4. Os frameworks do KDE não estão ainda sendo totalmente utilizados. Nós não estamos olhando pras coisas e dizendo: eu gostaria que tivéssemos algo pra fazer. Nós realmente fizemos isso no KDE3 mas não temos nada disso nos nossos planos agora. Nós somos como uma criancinha cuja mãe comprou uma camisa três vezes maior e disse a ele que ele ainda iria crescer muito – nós ainda temos muito espaço para crescer.”

Em poucos anos, o KDE5 provavelmente acontecerá, mas Seigo prevê seria muito mais como a que aconteceu entre o KDE2 e o KDE3, mas certamente não tão radical como a que houve entre o KDE3 e o KDE4. “Eu acho que nós provavelmente tivemos uma boa década de desenvolvimento do framework que temos agora”, Seigo fala.

Quer dizer, mais ou menos O Wt é uma biblioteca escrita em C++ para o desenvolvimento de aplicações web interativas. Fortemente influenciado pelo Qt, sem entretanto utilizá-lo como backend, o Wt possui como principais pontos fortes o alto desempenho, extenso conjunto de widgets e portabilidade.

A API é widget-centric e inspirado nas API’s para desktop, fornecendo para o desenvolvedor uma completa abstração dos detalhes específicos de aplicações web detalhes, incluindo manipulação de eventos, suporte a gráficos e URLs amigáveis. Ele vem com um servidor de aplicação que atua como um servidor web stand-alone, mas funciona também utilizando FastCGI integrado a outros servidores web.

Uma aplicação web desenvolvida com Wt é escrita em apenas uma linguagem compilada (C++), a partir da qual são automaticamente gerados o HTML/XHTML, Javascript, CGI, SVG/VML/ Canvas e código AJAX necessários. A responsabilidade de escrever aplicações web seguras e em conformidade com os navegadores é assumida pelo Wt.

O Google anunciou na última segunda-feira os alunos selecionados para o Google Summer of Code 2010: o grande programa de incentivo à participação de novos desenvolvedores em mais 150 instituições que desenvolvem software livre. O KDE é claro não poderia ficar de fora dessa. Este ano foram 50 alunos selecionados, um número recorde desde a nossa primeira participação no projeto. Dentre os projetos selecionados destacam-se aqueles dedicados ao lançamento do Quanta+ para o KDE4, suporte a múltiplos monitores, reconhecimento de faces no Digikam, modo de navegação no Marble, Plasma Media Center, transcoding on-the-fly no Amarok, plugins para community integration no KDevelop (aguardem o release da primeira versão agora no dia 1o de maio ), frontend adicional para o KDM baseado no Plasma, efeitos de animação no KPresenter, system tray específico para mobiles, Gluon player plasmoid, dentre outros.

Parabéns aos brasileiros Wagner Reck (aluno) e Tomaz Canabrava (mentor) que participarão do projeto que adicionará suporte a múltiplos formatos de grafos no Rocs e ao Paulo Rômulo que irá trabalhar com integração UPnP no KDE através do Solid. Podem esperar o KDE muito mais bacana e moderno a partir de agosto

Gente, mandamos fazer uma logo especial pro KDE Lovelace, um desenho que desse um toque feminino à tão conhecida marca do KDE, a engrenagem com o K no meio. Daí tivemos a ideia de fazer no lugar da engrenagem uma flor. Confiram! E tem de todas as cores, uma pra cada ocasião diferente. O artista responsável por essas belezuras é o André Filipe, do KDE-MG.

O KDE Lovelace é um grupo feminino brasileiro de usuárias e contribuidoras do projeto KDE, que nasceu no intuito de defender a ideia de que lugar de mulher também é na TI. Como hoje foi o flisol, tirei o dia para ajudar pessoas. Comecei ajudando a mim mesmo, a levantar da cama. peguei o laptop, a mochila e desci para a esquina de casa onde a Marlei e o Guax me pegaram e rumamos para o IFSC, antigo Cefet-SC. o SC significa Santa Catarina. Descobri isso hoje.

Chegando lá Conheci a @melissawm , um amor de pessoa, e assustadoramente é doutora em matemática. Meu pai sempre me falou para não confiar em pessoas que entendiam o conceito de infinito, por sorte, ela também não entendia.

Ficamos lá, Henrique, Marlei, Guax, Eu, Melissa e uns gatos pingados que eu não lembro o nome, até mais ou menos uma e meia, quando começaram a chegar nossas primeiras vitimas. Tinham 100 inscritos, mas estava chovendo. como o padrão de eventos com entrada gratuita é irem apenas a metade dos inscritos, esperamos por menos ainda. foram 40 pessoas aproximadamente.

As palestras transcorreram tranquilas, a minha vocês podem pegar aqui, uma pena não terem gravado, foi muito boa, falei que nem um pequeno tomaz alegre durante quase 50 min, e ameacei ficar olhando para as pessoas até deixa-las desconfortaveis caso não fizessem perguntas. fizeram várias, ai @heliocastro entrou e roubou a cena.

ainda não respondo as perguntas com a certeza que ele tem quando fala, então apenas me calei e fui ouvindo e aprendendo pra aplicar nas próximas palestras.

This is an huge event that happens in a lot of cities simultaniously, KDE had participation in 7 of the events in Brazil ( maybe more, but that’s the number that I have right now. )

• Belo Horizonte – MG : people from kde-mg like Amanda and Felipe, the ones that coordinate the local promo group have talks about translating kde and interaction with the team.
• Piaui:  Aracele Torres e o Chicão are present in the local Flisol, also with talks
• Florianopolis – SC: Me. I’m I did a talk about gathering new studants, it can be find here ( in portuguese)
• Campina Grande- PB: o Paulo Rômulo will be giving a talk based on Sandro Andrade’s KDE for Beginners.
• Porto Alegre – RS:  Camila Ayres was present, without a talk but ready to help anyone.

O projeto Chakra iniciou uma nova edição para netbooks e dispositivos menores chamada Chakra-Micro. Desenvolvida por Manuel Tortosa, é uma versão especializada, feita para netbooks e que utiliza o Plasma Netbook como ambiente padrão de usuário. A distro cabe perfeitamente em um pen drive de 1 GB.

The game’s name is Kingdom, it’s a card game all about conquering the stars, the project isn’t even pre-alfa, but at least I’ve made the basic engine and started to work on the graphics, but it will take me some time to finish it, altought I would have never come this far without the motivation that only a sprint can give.

After I finish reconfiguring my system (wich could mean a several days) I’ll post some pictures here, both of the game (even it’s nothing but a board with white rectangles writted with the name of the card) and the akademy, though it will be dificult to found one in wich I’m not programing…

1o dia

Quase todo mundo aqui esperando a chuva passar e tomando café da manhã quando finalmente pudemos começar as atividades do Akademy-BR 2010 por volta das 9:30. Após uma breve sessão de abertura para apresentação dos participantes, orientações gerais sobre o sprint e discussão dos resultados esperados, os grupos foram formados e as hacking sessions começaram em duas salas de reunião que organizamos no albergue.

Os interesses das pessoas vão desde o desenvolvimento de aplicações para o KDE-Games, Rocs, KEduca, Plasma, até ações de promoção do KDE e artwork. As meninas (Amanda, Camila, Taiane, Jordana, Yasmin, e Aracele) estão basicamente focadas na definição de um Plano de Promoção KDE Brasil para 2010, mas também em atividades de desenvolvimento (Plasma) e tradução.

Em resumo, o que temos planejado para o Akademy-BR:

• Submissões para o Summer of Code 2010: conseguimos enviar seis propostas para o GSoC 2010, onde cinco delas estão relacionados ao KDE. Luiz Romário submeteu uma proposta para a adição de suporte a OpenGL no KStars, Alexandre Raymond quer desenvolver um novo front-end para Git, incluindo uma KPart flexível, Reck Wagner submeteu uma proposta para melhorar as funcionalidades do Rocs para suportar autômatos, Taiane quer trabalhar em um ambiente Plasma educacional e Vitor Boschi apresentou uma proposta para um servidor HTTP genérico para o KDE. Arthur Nascimento enviou uma proposta relacionada com gcc;
• Sprint do KDE-Games: Tomaz está conduzindo um sprint do KDE-Games dedicado ao desenvolvimento de jogos de cartas e a ajudar os novatos no desenvolvimento do KDE em geral;
• Rocs: a execução de scripts agora é executada em uma thread secundária e o suporte para plugins foi melhorado;
• KDE Observatory: uma refatoração está sendo feita para melhorar o desempenho através de um novo banco de dados consolidado de commits ao invés de adquirir informações diretamente dos archives da lista kde-commits. Além disso, uma data engine está sendo criada para centralizar os dados para várias instâncias do KDE Observatory;
• Reunião da equipe de promo: foi realizada uma sessão de brainstorming para definir as prioridades de ações promocionais do KDE para 2010 no Brasil e os pontos focados foram: material de promoção compartilhado entre os grupos regionais KDE (palestras, material para mini-cursos, vídeos, etc), criação do canal KDE Brasil no YouTube para armazenar palestras sobre o KDE, entrevistas, experiências, etc, divulgação do KDE em áreas não-técnicas, visitando escolas, planejamento da participação do KDE Brasil no FISL e no Latinoware e a reativação do KDE Women;
• Chord Melody generator: Alexandre Amorim está trabalhando em um novo aplicativo para gerar arranjos de chord melody para violão e guitarra a partir de melodias e sequências harmônicas fornecidas como entrada;
• KEduca: a equipe do Metasys começou a dialogar com as outras pessoas do KDE sobre a melhor maneira de portar o KEduca para o KDE 4. Durante esta conversa, decidiu-se reescrever a aplicação com uma estrutura mais flexível e com uma melhor interface de usuário;
• Artwork: Anderson Viana dividiu o seu tempo desenvolvendo o logotipo oficial do KDE Brasil, ícones para o Rocs e material de promoção do KDE no FISL e Latinoware.

Após a hacking session saímos para jantar, tomar uma cervejinha e/ou cachaça para alguns e aqueles mais animados esticaram a noite em um barzinho com música ao vivo !

2o dia

Como se deve esperar de uma primeira edição do Akademy-BR as atividades envolvem desde novatos se acostumando ao processo de desenvolvimento para o KDE, equipe de promoção compreendendo melhor a comunidade KDE e suas demandas, até o pessoal de artwork com seus primeiros resultados e alguns veteranos melhorando suas aplicações.

O pessoal do Metasys com o apoio de Mauricio Piacentini começaram a aplicar os primeiros passos na transição do KEduca. Ao final do trabalho, espera-se ter um software capaz de realizar a criação, edição e correção de testes, suportar o formato QTI e a utilização de bases de testes remotas. Eu passei algum tempo apresentando as orientações básicas do Oxygen (equipe de artwork do KDE) e o material de artwork do techbase para Anderson Viana e trabalhando para implementar as melhorias no KDE Observatory. Uma versão inicial da data engine já está fornecendo as funcionalidades básicas e certamente vai torná-lo muito mais rápido e confiável.

Os participantes do sprint do KDE-Games trabalharam em dois novos jogos de cartas: Crokinole e Bohnanza . A implementação do jogador no Bohnanza foi feita por Vitor e Taiane, enquando Chicão e Camila trabalharam na implementação das funcionalidades do baralho. Embora todos nós saibamos que melhorias e correções de bugs já existentes é algo muito útil para todos, o Akademy-BR foi planejado como um meio para transpor as barreiras iniciais que os novos colaboradores brasileiros têm enfrentado ao tentar contribuir para o KDE. Então, se acostumando com um codebase específico, mesmo sendo mais fácil em pequenos projetos, poderia assustar um pouco aqueles programadores mais novos.

Wagner Reck fez um ótimo trabalho ao melhorar as funcionalidades do Rocs e torná-lo estável para o KDE 4.5. Isso sem contar, sua submissão de proposta para o GSoC com o objetivo de suportar outros formatos de grafos no Rocs, correção de alguns bugs na criação do menu de plugins e implementação da execução de plugins em uma thread secundária.

Filipe Saraiva e Aracele melhoraram o Kmplot, permitindo ao usuário definir novos rótulos para os eixos utilizados nos gráficos e Luiz Romário implementou o modo de demo no jogo Kiriki, além de ter enviado sua proposta para o GSoC com o objetivo de adicionar suporte a OpenGL no KStars. Amanda e os outros da equipe de promo fizeram a formatação do plano promocional do KDE Brasil para 2010 e refinaram as ações previstas para o FISL e Latinoware 2010. Estar envolvido na organização do evento e no apoio aos novos desenvolvedores,divulgadores e artistas não me deixou tanto tempo livre quanto eu gostaria para realmente hackear o Plasmate e Gluon, mas certamente semeamos o espírito do KDE nos novos participantes e podemos esperar novas contribuições brasileiras a partir de agora.

3o dia (último)

Sim, o Akademy-BR 2010 chega a seu último dia e algumas pessoas começam a sair de manhã cedo, enquanto outros ainda estão blogando sobre os resultados, novos amigos, expectativas para 2010, etc. A chuva não nos deu um descanso, mas felizmente nada comparado à tempestade do primeiro dia. As pessoas não puderam tomar sol nem explorar as outras amenidades da Praia do Forte mas, por outro lado, isso pode ter ajudado a manter o foco nas discussões e hacking sessions .

Aparentemente, Tomaz se apaixonou por todas as meninas do KDE Brasil ! e, não sendo suficiente a sua charmosa homenagem musical, pediu a Morgana (a propósito, uma talentosa artista – esta menina deveria estar nos nossos próximos eventos !) para fazer algo especial para o Akademy-BR . O resultado ? Aqui está:

O Akademy-BR 2010 foi realmente um evento muito agradável (e trabalhoso ) e eu gostaria de agradecer a todos que estavam lá para dar o seu suor pelo KDE, para estreitar as amizades dentro do KDE Brasil, para melhorar algumas aplicações e renovar nossas esperanças de um grande ano para o KDE. Software Livre involve pessoas acima de tudo e certamente alguns novos amigos surgiram neste evento !

My main goal was to work with the KDE-Edu, especially in Rocs, KAlgebra, and KmPlot. Among these, I turned mainly to the last one because I was playing a bit with it some weeks ago.

In a course at USP, I needed to plot a two-dimensional graph to display solutions of linear programming problems. No big deal, it would be done very well in gnuplot, for example, but I decided to try KmPlot in order to get more used to KDE-Edu tools.

I realized then that the software, unfortunately, didn’t have an option to change the labels of the coordinate axis. I asked myself: “oh god, such an educational software should have that option”. It soon came to my mind a student’s primary or secondary education, wanting to use the software and plotting graphs with all their coordinates labeled “X” and “Y”

I also remembered the lessons of those graphics and physics like “Velocity” according to “Time”. A physics teacher could not make efficient use of KmPlot in this example. I remembered me studying physics at school and I thought I would feel frustrated when trying to use KmPlot charts with “X” and “Y”. Then, taking to me the task of turning around this fact, falls into the field to implement this functionality.

This is the original window in the Configuration tab in the Diagram. Note that there are several options how to show the grid, the width axis, line, display labels and more. As that window set directly on the diagram, I added the functionality here to change the labels.

1 – Fully temable svg – nodes. so now you can use rocs for something less abstract than a simple colored ball. The icon of the node can be changed via scripting or via UI, on the node properties dialog.

2 – Rework of the Graph, Node and Edge properties dialog, for something less ugly and more functional.

3 – Support for multi script files.

4 – Threads Support. now your long running script will not block the ui anymore. work with the documents is done in the thread.

5 – Plugin support in C++ and JavaScript forms, your algorithm can now be easily embbed into Rocs UI =)

6 – Dynamic Properties redone, and working correctly.

7 – Lots of optimizations and code cleanup.

I wanna also thank Wagner Reck for implementing the Plugin Support in Akademy while I was really busy teaching the newcommers. =) you rock man.

The event was very good to strengthen community ties KDE-Br and also to  bring together new forces to the development and promotion of KDE. It is worth mentioning here at least two great resonances of this meeting: the first was the creation of the local group KDE-Pi, as composed by me, Filipe and  Francisco Fernandes (Chicao); and the other was the creation of KDE-Women Brazil, empowered by girls attended the event: me, Amanda, Camila, Taiane, Yasmin and Jordana. The expectations are very good, i hope i can do better by two new groups. A big responsibility and a lot of work ahead.

P.S.: I loved know everybody, especially girls.

Yes, Akademy-BR 2010 reaches its last day and some people started to leave early morning while still others were blogging about the outcomes, new friends, expectations for 2010, etc. The rain didn’t gave us a rest but fortunately nothing compared to the first day storm. People could neither sunbathe nor explore other amenities in Praia do Forte (sorry Amanda ) but, on the other hand, that may have contributed to keep focused on hacking and discussion .

Apparently, Tomaz has fallen in love with all KDE Brasil girls ! and not being enough his cute musical honour to them he asked Morgana (by the way, a quite talented artist – that girl should be in our next meetings !) to do something special to Akademy-BR The result ? Here it is:

So, that’s all. Akademy-BR 2010 was a quite pleasant (and laborious ) time for me and I would like to thank all guys and girls were there for giving their sweat to narrowing KDE Brasil friendship, improving some applications, and renewing our hopes of a great year for KDE. Free Software is about people and certainly some new friends will be around !

I could do virtually nothing, since I was trapped in my own house, I almost needed an boat to get out of it, and I still needed to gather the rest. when I got Amanda, the water was so high that I had to search for a better way to come home for almost an hour, delaying even more.

at 7p.m, I had a microbus to get 12 people that was waiting at my house to the place where the akademy was going to be held, in Praia do Forte. I got there at 1a.m, since I still had to pick up one girl from KDE – RS, one of our new local teams ( that has three members till now, but plans to grow and take care of the brazilian southness. )

Notwithstanding the rain, I must admit that the overall experience was not good within Akademy-BR. It was great. In a supportively manner, everybody contributed – just as the opensource collaborative hivemind says we must – to the development of a keyword that describes the feeling for every participant : oneness.

We were about 30, scattered over this immense country, sharing accents and cultures, working together. We developed more than applications, fixes and promotion material – for me, I’d say: I developed friendships.

Well, if that’s the spirit of development sprints, sign me in for the next one! And what did I do during this period?

On day 1, I kept working on my GSoC proposal: KDE Git Tool and KPart. Unfortunately, I failed to submit the images that were supposed to come along, but I hope that it won’t be a major concern during evaluation.

While on the KDE-Games sprint everybody seemed to be working with card games, Tomaz kindly ‘forced’ me to work in the development of a game called Crokinole (day 2!). It sounded fun, so I jumped right into it, and started to implement the 2D game engine, along with collisions and dynamic physics (I know, I know, I will go for Box2D or ODE anytime soon, but I just wanted to learn how to do it). Although my calculations are rather feasible, it perhaps (not really close to reality) can be an option to take it further. As soon as I have something solid and playable, I will post it here!

I will not post any screenshots for now since there isn’t much to ‘see’. Day 3 ended up sooner than expected, and we left in the morning with Hélio Castro, in a – still – rainy trip to the Airport. We got there in time, he didn’t lose his flight, and everything is fine (I hope so!).

And who am I? Allow me to introduce myself. I’m Alexandre (or Alex) Raymond, computer science student, a real enthusiast of good ol’ C programming and a newly-addicted C++/Qt hacker. I usually lecture C extension courses on universities around here, and work severely to evangelize (away from the evils of Java) my colleagues and friends. I’m also an amateur instrumental (classical guitar) composer and crazy about motorsports and driving!

I would like to thank everyone involved to make the Akademy-BR possible! Some special thanks to Tomaz, Sandro, Hélio and Piacentini for their words of wisdom and guidance!

The Metasys guys and Mauricio Piacentini started to implement the first steps for KEduca. In the end of their work it is expected to have a software capable of handle tests creation, edition and correction, QTI format support and use of remote tests databases. I was introducing the Oxygen guidelines and artwork stuff in techbase to Anderson Viana and still working in KDE Observatory improvements. An initial version of its data engine is already providing the basic functionalities and that will certainly make it much faster and more reliable.

The guys in KDE-Games sprint have been working in two new card games: Crokinole and Bohnanza. You should wait a detailed post from Tomaz explaining the game rationale and current status but I can anticipate you that Bohnanza player and board implementation is somehow finished (thanks to Vitor e Taiane) and Chicão and Camila have been working in the card deck implementation. Whilst we all know that improving or bugfixing already existing KDE-Games applications would be quite useful for us, Akademy-BR was planned as a mean to overcome the initial barriers new Brazilian contributors has been facing when trying to contribute to KDE. So, getting used to a specific codebase, even for smaller and easier projects, could scare some fresh blood at first.

Wagner Reck has done a great work improving Rocs functionalities and making things stable for KDE 4.5. Apart from his GSoC proposal submission devoted to provide multiple graph formats support in Rocs, he managed to fix some bugs in plugin menu creation and to make the execution of plugins in a secondary thread stable for the next Rocs release.

Filipe Saraiva and Aracele have improved Kmplot by allowing the user to define new labels for axis used in charts and Luiz Romário has implemented the demo mode in Kiriki game, besides his GSoC proposal to add OpenGL support in KStars. Amanda and the other promo guys has been formatting the promo plan for 2010 and refining the planned actions in FISL 2010 and Latinoware 2010. Being involved in organizational stuff and supporting new developers, promoters, and artists haven’t left me with much free time as I would really like to hack in Plasmate and Gluon but for sure we are seeding the KDE spirit in some quite interested fresh blood so that we should expect some new Brazilian contributors from now on.

People interests range from source code development in KDE-Games, Rocs, KEduca, Plasmate, to promo actions, and artwork. The girls (Amanda, Camila, Taiane, Jordana, Yasmin, and Aracele) are basically focused in defining a KDE Brasil Promotion Plan for 2010 but also in coding activities (Plasma) and translation.

In summary, what we have been doing:

• Summer of Code 2010 submissions: we managed to submit six GSoC 2010 proposals where five of them are related to KDE. Luiz Romário has submitted a proposal for adding OpenGL support in KStars, Alexandre Raymond wants to develop a new front-end for Git including a flexible KPart, Wagner Reck has submitted a proposal for enhancing Rocs functionalities to support automata, Taiane wants to work in a Plasma Educational desktop, and Vitor Boschi has submitted a proposal for a generic HTTP server for KDE. Arthur Nascimento has submitted a proposal related to gcc;
• KDE-Games sprint: Tomaz is leading a KDE-Games sprint devoted to card games development and helping the newbies in general KDE development;
• Rocs: scripting execution is now performed in a secondary thread and support for plugins has been improved;
• KDE Observatory: a major refactoring is being done to speed up performance by using a new database of consolidated commit data instead of acquiring information directly from kde-commits archive. In addition, a data engine is being created to centralise data to multiple KDE Observatory instances;
• Promo meeting: a brainstorm session for defining the priorities of KDE promo actions for 2010 in Brazil has happened and the focused points were: to share promotion stuff among regional KDE groups (talks, short-course material, videos, etc), to create KDE Brasil channel on YouTube to store KDE talks, interviews, experiences, etc, to spread KDE in non-technical areas by visiting high schools, to plan the KDE Brasil participation in FISL and Latinoware, and to revive KDE Women;
• Chord Melody generator: Alexandre Amorim is working in a new application for generating guitar chord melody arrangements from melody and chord sequences as input;
• KEduca: Metasys team started the talk with the  other KDE guys about the best way to port Keduca to KDE 4. During this talks was decided to rewrite the aplication with a more flexible structure and with a better user interface;
• Artwork: Anderson Viana has shared its time to develop the official KDE Brasil logo, Rocs icons, and promotion stuff for FISL and Latinoware.

After the hacking session we all went out for dinner, some beer and cachaça, and the more excited ones went on for dancing and drinking !

Yes, even under a heavy storm occuring the entire day, with some delayed/modified flights, locked streets, and hard car driving to Akademy-BR venue, the first participants began to arrive yesterday early afternoon. As a panorama of participants skills we can briefly enumerate 19 developers, 3 artwork guys, 6 promotion people, and 2 translators. An advance program and breakout groups (in portuguese, sorry) can be found in Akademy-BR 2010 page. We have scheduled hacking sessions for Rocs (KDE-Edu), Plasmate, KDE Observatory, KGraphViewer, Amarok, and DImpress 3D, as well as a KDE-Games sprint lasting three mornings and a promo meeting aiming the definition of a KDE Brazil Promotion Plan 2010. As for the artwork activities, there are efforts for localized wallpapers, and Rocs and Plasmate icons.

And this passion is taking me to Akademy-BR, this desire to contribute and make it even better. That’s also what drives a historian wanting to learn to program in order to contribute something more than translation and promotion stuff. I feel the Akademy-BR will be a wonderful experience for me, having the opportunity to deepen my knowledge about KDE and closer ties with the KDE Brazil community. I will try to learn as much as I can with the veterans and dedicate myself to make this event even more productive. I would like to thank KDE Brazil for allowing me to participate in this exchange of experience. I promise to contribute whatever I can.

With no server in hands, I began my own implementation, which supports large transfers without eating all system memory. This is somewhat like file reading: you fetch just a small chunk of data at a time, process it, and only then you request more data. This is a bit harder than reading everything at once, but also a lot more scalable. So I got a working server and a working application (kpws, in playground -> utils), and the I found another application, Kepas, which does almost the same thing I just wrote.

This made me stop my own app for a while, because I think KDE will benefit from having a single HTTP server implementation , just like it have a client one, and I’d like to write it as a GSoC project, but first I need to gather some feedback from the other developers, specially the ones from the applications I cited here. Do you think this will improve security, performance, maintainability and code reuse? Would it be a good GSoC project?

Well, some weeks back i commited an initial project for plugins on Rocs, and it’s almost finished… but i had a question about life, the universe and everything: Why i took too long (3 weeks) to put it to work ?

First, i have some others stuff to do, but, this is not a true answer…

Second, I started with QtPlugins, It worked very well! But, and it is a big but, how will Rocs know the location of the installed plugins? since plugins are shared lib loaded at runtime, I had to make this work somehow. So at IRC, #kde-dev, Rakuko told me something about KServices, unknow by me till then. So, with a little search on the KDE api, i found the rigth way (or KDE way) to make it works flawessly.

So, I had to stop doing with Qt Plugins and rewriting everything to use KServices, back from line zero. =)

After some hack. i had a problem loading the plugins, they were found in the system, but not loaded… So i started to look at other plugins (from kopete for instance) , Plugin example from kdevelop (What if some KDE programs where closed source? Maybe i will be still boring people at IRC to resolve that =). But it worked, compiled in a charmingly and cute way, then I forgot to work on them for another week.

Until the end of last week Rocs was compiled with static libs, so Tomaz made a shared lib with core classes, including plugin manager and interfaces and i went back to hack today. Looking at TextEditor plugin example, i saw 2 things that i have not noticied back then: use of library export (KDE_EXPORT/KDE_IMPORT) and use of explicit at contructor, both at interface class declaration.

With this 2 things, plugins started to load

Now Rocs have import/export and initial tools plugins suport. In next post i will give all the needs to write your own plugin… by now take a look in this screenshot of import/export and a set of nodes with some properties.

The newest member of the family, founded 4 weeks ago, primarily by Vitor, Taiane and Artur. one is already a KDE Contribuitor ( vitor ) and they are working quite hard already. Vitor’s trying GSoC, and also Taiane. It was because of them that I was in São Paulo last weekend for a trainning session with the local townspeople. =)

In the persons of Wagner Reck and Camila Ayres, Wagner is already a KDE Contribuitor working with me in some KDE – Edu programs, Camila is a Wannabe KDE Hacker, and to fulfill that dream, she was also one of the ones that took my Crash Qt Course last Weekend.
